Biologi Glossary: The skincare terms you need to know!

As a brand deep-rooted in plant and cellular science, we understand that for many consumers, Biologi is a new concept.

While we often talk about the revolutionary extraction system that led to our fully active range of skincare products, we also understand that a lot of the terms we use can be confusing, especially if this is the first time you’ve been exposed to skincare with plant actives.

Because we believe that knowledge is power for consumers making the best choices for their skincare, it’s our goal to help you understand exactly what you’re putting on your skin and WHY Biologi gives the best results.

Rather than blinding you with science, we’ve broken things down and created an essential glossary of some of our most widely used terms.

Active ingredients are those that have been scientifically proven to change the functionality and structure of the skin on a cellular level.

Bioactive ingredients function on the skin just as they do in the plant which is why active ingredients deliver the best results. If a product is only 2% active, it is 98% synthetic formulating ingredients.

All Biologi serums are 100% active with transformative power in every drop.

Barrier function

The skin’s barrier is the outer layer responsible for protecting the rest of the body against external toxins and pollution. If the barrier function is impaired, you may notice sensitised skin with symptoms such as dryness, itching and redness.

CLECS II is the patent-pending revolutionary extraction system developed by Biologi founder, Ross Macdougald, here in Australia. The extraction system captures plant phytonutrients in their unique cellular matrix (PNP™) to protect the extracts allowing them to function on the skin just as they do in the plant.

Phytonutrients are compounds naturally occurring in plants that are beneficial to human health and skin. Plants contain thousands of phytonutrients that give the most benefits when delivered in their most natural and active state.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant essential for reducing inflammation, stimulating collage production leading to healthy skin. Vitamin C is not to be confused with…

…Ascorbic acid

If a product label boasts all the benefits of vitamin C but the ingredients label includes ‘ascorbic acid’ (or a derivative of), this is NOT natural vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is a synthetic derivative of vitamin C and is made in a laboratory, NOT a plant.

Finger lime

Australian finger lime is the single-plant ingredient used to create Bf Restore Face & Body Serum. Jam-packed with nourishing phytonutrients such as vitamin C, tryptophan and ferulic acid, finger lime was chosen for our signature range of serums because of its restorative benefits to the skin.

Kakadu plum

Sourced from Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory, Kakadu plum contains levels of natural vitamin C more potent than an orange! Kakadu plum is the single-plant ingredient used in Bk Rejuvenation Serum and Bqk Radiance evening serum chosen because it helps to promote collagen production, reduce the signs of pigmentation, increase suppleness and diminish signs of ageing.

PNP™ stands for phytonutrient protection. This is the plant’s unique liquid carrier matrix which allows us to harness the power of phytonutrients without the use of chemical manipulation.

The PNP™ protects the actives and keeps them stable so that they work on the skin just as they do in the plant.

Sensitised skin

Sensitised skin is often confused with sensitive skin. Sensitised skin is caused by a damaged barrier function and can leave skin cracked, red, dry and irritated. The good news is that by removing toxins and healing the outer layer, sensitised skin can be cured.

All Biologi serums are multiuse. This means they treat a range of skin concerns in just one application. We’re all about simplicity and with a range of serums that can be used morning and night on various skin types, we’re keeping things simple.

Serum cleanser

Serum cleansers are created with active ingredients which penetrate deeper into the pores and continue working on the function of the skin long after the cleanser residue has been washed away.

Naturally derived

Naturally derived is a buzzword that all consumers need to be aware of. Far from being a positive term, products containing naturally derived ingredients are often heavily diluted and filled with synthetics to give the extracts their power.

Clean cosmeceuticals

Clean cosmeceuticals are a skincare category containing products that are ethically manufactured and completely free from synthetic formulating ingredients. Clean cosmeceuticals achieve results without the addition of SLSs, parabens, artificial fragrance, silicones, emulsifiers or even water.

Antioxidants are compounds that protect the skin’s surface from damage caused by free radicals created by UV damage and environmental toxins. Antioxidants can reduce the visible signs of ageing while defending against future damage.

Anthocyanin is a flavonoid that can reduce the early signs of ageing and promote the regenerative capacity of the skin to hydrate and restore damage caused by overexposure to the sun and pollution.

Tartaric acid

Tartaric acid is a fruit acid that can help to reduce redness, clear blocked pores and brighten the complexion. Tartaric acid is particularly helpful in treating acne-impacted skin as it helps regulate oil flow and reduce blocked pores.

Cold pressing is a method of extracting oil with a seed press. By removing exposure of extracts to extreme heat, the integrity of the natural nutrients is protected, leading to a higher nutritional content of the oil and therefore more potent benefits to your skin. Br Organic Rosehip Oil is the only rosehip oil on the market that is cold-pressed and unrefined.

A water-soluble ingredient is simply one that’s dissolvable in water.  Water-soluble vitamins are more easily absorbed by the body and ideal for balancing dehydrated skin.

Similarly, oil-soluble ingredients will only dissolve in oil. Oil-soluble ingredients commonly used in skincare include essential oils, vitamin A and vitamin E. Oil-soluble ingredients are suited to hydrating dry skin.
