Biologi’s ultimate summer skincare routine
As the mercury rises across Australia, there’s no avoiding the harsh summer sunshine.
Unfortunately, those long hot days at the beach with the sun on your skin and the salt in your hair may leave you feeling great, but they will take their toll on the body’s largest organ – the skin.
The golden glow you get from an afternoon in the sun may give you a good tan, but it can also increase the risk of skin cancer, accelerate the visible signs of ageing and increase skin alterations such as pigmentation and sun spots.
While exposing bare skin to the sun for a few minutes each day is the most natural way to increase vitamin D levels in the body (essential for optimal health), outside of this, the sun is not your skin’s friend.
Protect cells and help your skin recover from UV exposure by following out ultimate summer skin routine.
1) Always wear sunscreen
Sunscreen is an absolute non-negotiable.
Whether you’re planning a day at the beach or simply running around doing errands, sunscreen must be applied daily.
Sunscreen is formulated with ingredients that protect against the immediate signs of UVB damage such as redness and stinging. Sunscreen may also protect the skin from UVA damage which isn’t so easy to spot.
UVA rays penetrate the cells at a deeper layer. Damage includes fine lines and wrinkles, dehydration and increased risk of skin cancer. Once cells are damaged by UVA rays, it can be difficult to reverse which is why sunscreen is critical.
Apply a minimum of factor 30 to the face and body before stepping outside each day. Always make sure you use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays (you can’t assume this is the case, always read the label).
Summer skin tip: An NCBI study reveals that up to 80% of ageing is caused by exposure to the sun. A facial sunscreen should become part of your daily skincare routine whatever the weather. You can read more about choosing the ideal sunscreen here,
2) Build up antioxidant protection
While a high SPF will protect cells from the sun’s rays, sunscreen won’t defend against free radical damage that occurs when UV radiation contacts the skin.
The easiest and most effective way to break the free radical chain reaction and counteract cellular damage is to apply antioxidants directly to the skin.
The following are 100% active nutrients naturally occurring in Biologi serums. These potent phytoactives strengthen the skin’s protective barrier and deter free radicals from penetrating the deeper skin cells.
Vitamin C: A carbohydrate present in Kakadu plum and finger lime (Bk and Bf serums)
Gallic Acid: A phenolic acid present in Davidson plum and Kakadu plum (Bd and Bk serums)
Quercetin: A flavanol present in Davidson plum (Bd serum)
Summer skin tip: Apply chosen serum to your face each morning. The antioxidants will work together with sunscreen to provide full protection from environmental toxins while reducing the visible effects of previous free radical damage.
3) Treat sun-exposed skin quickly
When the skin is exposed to UV rays, a pigment called melanin is produced to absorb the rays and defend against damage. While melanin initially turns skin brown, too much exposure can cause a toxic reaction which results in red, stinging and hot skin.
Excess sun can severely damage cells and should be avoided at all costs. Not only can it cause pain and discomfort, but skin that’s sore or hot to touch indicates exposure to more UV radiation than it can process. This highlights cellular damage which can be a leading cause of skin cancer.
Summer skin tip: Heal sun-affected skin faster by applying Bf serum. Bf is single-plant extract of finger lime and contains a potent combination of natural vitamin C, tryptophan and ferulic acid. These active nutrients accelerate the healing of damaged cells to reduce redness and relieve discomfort faster.
4) Drink lots of water
The more your skin is exposed to the sun, the more water it will lose through sweat.
Keep skin cells hydrated internally by increasing water intake either consumed through plain water, smoothies or herbal teas.
Hydrating from within strengthens cells and leads to a dewy, balanced complexion.
Summer skin tip: Avoid caffeinated drinks as these can have a diuretic effect and increase dehydration.
5) Protect against pigmentation
Pigmentation displays as different coloured patches and occurs when melanin is distributed unevenly.
While pigmentation is largely non-irritating and generally painless, it does indicate a cellular irregularity that can lead to permanent damage and even cancer.
The most effective way to protect against and reduce pigmentation is to apply active ingredients that inhibit melanogenesis naturally.
Bqk Radiance serum is a two-step morning and night-time ritual that improves the appearance of skin pigmentation without compromising healthy cells and without the use of synthetic activating agents.
Kakadu plum is the single-plant ingredient extract for the morning ritual rich in plant-based vitamin C and pigment-inhibiting phytoactives, ellagic and gallic acid.
As well as attacking pigmentation, Kakadu plum also reduces the visible signs of ageing caused by sun damage and brightens the overall appearance of the skin.
Radiance evening serum is single-plant ingredient extract of quandong
Quandong is a natural source of natural tryptophan, ferulic acid, rutin and chlorogenic acid which work in synergy to reduce redness and existing pigmentation while preventing further pigmentation from forming.
Summer skin tip: Follow the Bqk two-step ritual during the summer months to reduce skin alterations such as pigmentation and sun spots and prevent further damage from forming.
Ultimately, the best defence against sun damage is to stay out of the sun completely, however, we understand that may not be practical, or fun!
