Eczema Awareness Week #morethanjustskin
This week marks the start of Eczema Awareness Week, an initiative introduced by the Eczema Association Australia. From now until the end of this week, we’re focusing on the hashtag #morethanjustskin!
Eczema is a common skin concern affecting 10-15% of the Australian population. While many topical treatments have been designed to reduce the symptoms of eczema, at Biologi, we’ve taken skincare back to basics. Passionate about giving the skin everything it needs to thrive, we provide fully active plant nutrients that can heal and repair the damaged skin barrier that may cause chronic skin conditions.
What is eczema?
Eczema is a chronic skin condition that impacts the skin by making it red, itchy, swollen and inflamed. Sometimes the irritation is so great, the skin is uncomfortable, sensitive or sore to touch. It can even become infected.
The cause of eczema is unknown but much research points to both internal and external triggers. Asthma, hay fever, genetics, stress, immune dysfunction, irritants or allergens and a damaged skin barrier are all potential triggers of an inflammatory response in the body that can lead to painful or uncomfortable symptoms.
Eczema and the skin barrier
The skin barrier is critical to healthy skin because it protects the deeper layers of the skin from pathogens and bacteria. If the barrier is weak or doesn’t fully function, microorganisms can penetrate the epidermis leading to an inflammatory response that can present in symptoms of eczema.
How to treat eczema
Treating or reducing the symptoms of eczema is a unique journey. While we’d love to provide a magic cure, we cannot state strongly enough that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to treatment.
Successful treatment can often depend on the cause which varies from person to person. At Biologi, we advise those living with eczema to identify the cause of the individual outbreak to then decide the most appropriate treatment.
While we can make suggestions, we can’t stress enough the importance of finding a treatment program that works for you and you alone. In many cases, this will involve a holistic approach to skincare including gut health, identifying food intolerances and allergies and the appropriate skincare for you. You might also want to consult with other professionals such as skin experts, nutritionists or naturopaths.
If you’re living with eczema, here are some of our general guidelines to help reduce the symptoms.
Repair the skin’s barrier
Our biggest tip for anyone living with eczema is that whatever the cause, repairing the broken barrier function is critical to reducing the symptoms.
Remove all irritating ingredients such as fragrance, harsh scrubs or AHAs that can potentially impair an already damaged barrier function. Apply restoring phytoactives such as tryptophan, ferulic acid and vitamin C to nourish and hydrate the skin and repair the barrier instead.
Avoid soap and cleansers that may contain harsh surfactants and can irritate an already sensitised skin type. Consider the ‘less is more’ approach and remove anything from your skincare routine that the skin doesn’t need. Active ingredients can heal, nourish and repair the skin on a cellular level without the use of synthetics so they’re an ideal choice to apply to eczema-affected skin.
Avoid potential allergens
Artificial colours, dairy, fragrance, synthetic soaps and formulation fillers are common allergens that can irritate the skin. Reduce the use of these to give the skin a chance to heal.
Biologi products are free from synthetic activating ingredients, surfactants and irritating fragrance making them ideal to use on eczema-affected skin.
Our ideal routine includes:
- Remove makeup and surface dirt with a wet microfibre cloth
- Apply Bc Refresh Cleanser to cleanse skin and prepare the skin’s surface
- Apply Bf Restore Face & Body Serum
- If skin feels a little dry after the serum, apply Br Organic Rosehip Oil as a final step (you can even use a Gua Sha on skin not directly affected by eczema).
Because these products are free from synthetic formulating ingredients, you can repeat these steps morning and night as often as required.
Why choose Bf Restore Face & Body Serum?
Bf Restore Face & Body Serum is our most highly recommended serum to apply to eczema-affected skin. When choosing the extracts for our range of clean cosmeceuticals, we have selected highly performing plant actives based on their benefits to cellular health and function.
Finger lime extract contains tryptophan which is an amino acid that locks moisture into the skin to hydrate and heal the impaired barrier. Ferulic acid is an antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress and protects cells. Finally, plant-based vitamin C helps the cells retain water to heal and increase neocollagenesis.
Finger lime also contains minerals including magnesium, calcium, potassium, sodium, copper, selenium, iron, manganese and phosphorus which act as catalysts for many biological reactions and are necessary for the transmission of messages, uptake of essential nutrients and to help the overall condition of the skin.
Bf Restore Face & Body Serum is proven by customers to work on sensitised and broken barrier function. The serum is free from artificial ingredients, colours and emulsifiers that can irritate sensitive skin types.
“We are passionate about helping consumers understand what the skin needs to thrive. Our range of clean cosmeceuticals is 100% active meaning that every drop of Biologi serum treats the skin on a cellular level to improve health and function of the skin. We couldn’t be prouder of the results our customers experience when using Biologi.” Ross Macdougald, Founder
