Why does the skin change in winter?

The outer, protective layer of skin has many different functions. Essentially, the epidermal barrier stops toxins and pathogens from getting in, and moisture and lipids from getting out. A strong barrier is vital for healthy skin and hydration.

The barrier is influenced by the environment. When exposed to cold winds and extreme temperatures such as heating and cold, combined with the lack of humidity in the air, skin can become red, dehydrated, irritated and sensitive.

If your skin is grappling with the harsher climes, here are our essential tips for healthy skin this winter.

1) Turn down the temperature on the shower

While the body might love a hot shower or bath at the end of a cold day, the skin’s response is the polar opposite. The extreme heat experienced by hot water can deplete the skin’s natural oils which impacts the natural hydrating processes.

This lack of natural moisture can lead to dry, flaky, irritated skin that can be harder to hydrate.

Keep showers and baths cool and your skin will thank you.

2) Exfoliate regularly

The skin might feel extra sensitive at this time of year, but that’s no reason to skip exfoliation. Buffing away dead skin cells can keep pores clean and brighten the complexion.

While the skin is more delicate, we recommend you avoid harsh scrubs which can cause irritation or sensitised skin. Instead, opt for a gentle enzyme exfoliant that is kinder to the skin.

3) Always wear sunscreen

If there’s one thing you must do all year round, it’s to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays emitted by the sun. Sunscreen is an absolute must every day before you leave the house. Even if the sky is cloudy, the rays can still penetrate delicate skin cells leading to dehydrated skin and premature ageing.

4) Get a good night’s sleep

Disturbed, broken or lack of sleep takes its toll on the skin leaving dark circles, a dull appearance and disrupting cellular repair.

Aim for a minimum of seven to eight hours a night to support cellular turnover and leave skin cells looking healthy and glowing, whatever the weather.

5) Build antioxidant protection

Antioxidants protect the skin against free radical damage caused by pollutants found in the environment. Use an antioxidant serum such as Bd Luminosity Serum to strengthen the skin’s outer layer so it can destroy the free radical chain reaction that causes damage including cracked, broken and sensitised skin.

6) Drink more water

While a warming hot chocolate might be what your body craves in the cooler temps, water intake is as important during the cooler months as it is in hot weather when you sweat more.

The skin is the body’s largest organ and needs adequate hydration to function optimally. Hydrated skin is bright, smooth, supple and luminous as opposed to dull, dry and irritated. Aim for two to three litres a day.
