How do I know my skin type? The ultimate guide to choosing products based on skin type.

While skincare routines are traditionally centred around product use, when beginning a new skincare regime, it is important to go back to the very basics of skincare…your skin type.

There’s little point in applying products designed for cells that simply don’t function the same as yours. Not only will you waste time and money, but without giving your cells the TLC they uniquely need, you won’t achieve the visible, long-lasting results possible when you choose active ingredients specifically suited to your skin type.

So, here’s our request asking you to forget the marketing hype.

Put the promises on the side of the bottles out of your mind, and let’s take skincare right back to the beginning.

Today, we’re going to help you answer the first and most essential question of skincare…how do I know my skin type?

Oily skin

Oily skin is the result of excess sebum production. The skin can appear shiny and more prone to blackheads, breakouts and enlarged pores. While the t-zone is more prone to excess oil, the whole face can appear greasy and have a sheen that’s hard to cover up with makeup.

Products for oily skin

To treat oily skin, you must first address the factors that contribute to excess sebum. We can’t tell you the cause of your oily skin, but potential factors can include stress, hormone imbalance, nutrition intolerance and even genetics.

If your skin is oily, we recommend Bg Defence Anti-Pollution Serum. Bg Defence is extract of strawberry gum leaf and the first Biologi product to contain salicylic acid, which is a BHA, known to gently penetrate the pores where oil is produced and work as a mild exfoliant clearing blockages and moving impurities to the surface to keep pores clear. Bg Defence also contains niacinamide B3 that is known to help regulate oil flow.

Dry skin

Dry skin is the opposite of oily skin. Caused by a lack of natural oil in the cells, dry skin is caused by internal triggers such as hormones, food intolerances and, again, genetics. There is no cure for dry skin and treating the symptoms relies on identifying the causes to address oil flow.

Products for dry skin

With no cure for dry skin, treatment lies in nourishing and replenishing the skin barrier. We recommend applying Br Organic Rosehip Oil which is rich in essential fatty acids, vitamin A  and Vitamin E to assist in restoring and protecting a dry skin.  Br is effective to use over a Biologi serum or can be used on its own.

Dehydrated skin

Dehydrated skin is caused by a lack of water in the body. While the symptoms may appear similar to dry skin, dehydrated skin that appears flaky and dry to the touch is entirely preventable, and treatment is within your control.

Products for dehydrated skin

We recommend applying Bf Restore Face & Body Serum. The extract of finger lime contains hard-working actives such as ferulic acid, vitamin C and tryptophan that work in synergy to gently repair damaged cells while building antioxidant protection to strengthen and hydrate the skin.

As long as the skin isn’t broken or irritated, we also recommend exfoliation once to twice a week using Bx Reveal Exfoliant. The triple-acting formula relies on the power of rice and Kakadu plum powders to sweep dead skin cells away from the surface and make way for newer, more hydrated cells.

Normal skin

Normal skin sits in the middle of all skin types. It isn’t dry, oily or susceptible to breakouts. Normal skin doesn’t typically have sensitivity issues such as redness or stinging, and it doesn’t react to products containing synthetic ingredients.

Products for normal skin

To give normal skin an extra glow, we recommend Bd Luminosity Serum. Containing a potent combination of tartaric acid, anthocyanin and quercetin, the active ingredients in Bd Luminosity Serum were specifically chosen based on their power to reduce redness and increase cellular turnover for a complexion so bright it glows.

Combination skin

Combination skin has both dry and oily areas. While the t-zone is usually oily and the cheeks and chin are dry, there are no set rules on where the different skin textures occur. If you experience greasy skin in one area and flaking in another, your skin is combination.

Products for combination skin

Bc Refresh Cleanser is the perfect daily product for combination skin. Containing a powerful blend of hydrating phytonutrients such as amino acids, amines and phenolic acids, the soapberry extract works hard to regulate oil flow without stripping the skin of essential oils required to hydrate dry skin. Cleanse twice a day using a microfibre cloth to remove residue.

Sensitised skin

Sensitised skin is often confused with sensitive skin, but the two are very different.

Sensitive skin is a skin type mostly led by genetics and applying skincare that helps to keep a sensitive skin strong and supported is key.

Sensitised skin, however, is caused by a damaged barrier function through incorrect product use, medication, illness or even the environment. This skin condition can leave skin cracked, red, dry and irritated. The good news is that by building the barrier of the skin and increasing hydration will help reduce the irritation and repair the skin.

Products for sensitive and sensitised skin

We recommend Bf Restore Face & Body Serum to repair the damaged barrier designed to lock hydration into the cells and keep toxins out.

While applying only Bf Restore Face & Body Serum, we also recommend removing all unnecessary products from your skincare routine, especially irritating fragrances. A skin fast will give the skin time to heal without increasing the toxic load on the skin that can contribute to further damage. You can read more about skin fasting here.
