Maskne: Five ways to protect and repair mask-affected skin

While the onset of the global pandemic was the gateway to a wide range of health and lifestyle changes, the skin has also taken one for the team in the name of COVID-19.

As a key healthcare directive in the prevention and slowing of the virus, governments across the globe have mandated the wearing of face masks in many public spaces, workplaces and during travel.

Of course, the health benefits of wearing a mask can’t be underestimated. But when adorned on a long-term, ongoing basis (and especially when combined with the Australian summer humidity), face masks are undeniably taking their toll on the skin.

Enter maskne.

What is maskne?

The skin is the largest organ and needs to breathe. When pores become blocked, the combination of sweat and warm breath can create a humid environment ideal for breeding bacteria. Clogged pores can lead to breakouts, redness and sensitivity or what we now know as maskne.

While particularly prevalent in today’s COVID times, maskne is anything but a new skin concern.

‘Acne mechanica’ is a well-known condition caused by the ongoing use of PPE. Healthcare workers have been experiencing maskne for years. But with the pandemic now shining a light on the prevalent skin concern for the everyday consumer, today we’re sharing five ways you can protect and repair mask-affected skin to minimise the symptoms of maskne.

1) Cleanse skin thoroughly twice a day

Hot, humid, sweaty skin creates a moist environment perfect for pore-clogging bacteria to breed.

Regular cleansing keeps the surface of the skin clean and clear while helping the pores breathe.

Remove makeup and surface dirt with a microfibre cloth at the start and end of every day. After removing makeup in the evening, cleanse the skin thoroughly with Bc Refresh Cleanser to gently remove all traces of bacteria without stripping the skin’s natural oils.

2) Lunchtime restore

While we recommend cleansing at the start and end of the day, if your schedule allows, why not give your skin an afternoon pick-me-up too?

Follow an afternoon cleanse with a pump of Bf Restore Face & Body Serum across the chin area to build antioxidant protection, increase hydration, calm the skin and maintain a strong skin microbiome barrier.

Midway through the day is also the ideal time to replace your disposable mask or swap a reusable mask for a fresh one to reduce the bacteria on the skin.

3) Don’t over-exfoliate

Exfoliation with Bx Reveal helps encourage cellular regeneration and keep skin cells clear, but you can have too much of a good thing. If you’re experiencing irritated skin, avoid exfoliation until your skin is fully repaired with no signs of redness or inflammation. A damaged barrier is not only painful, but it can also make it easier for toxins to enter the deeper layers causing further irritation and sensitivity.

4) Reduce the toxic load on your skin

If you can go makeup-free while wearing a mask, you’ll reduce the bacteria that can penetrate pores and lead to breakouts. Either swap out heavy foundations for lighter formulations or remove makeup altogether.

5) Apply Bd Luminosity Serum

The extract of Davidson plum contains tartaric acid that works as an enzyme exfoliant to clear blocked pores and keep debris moving.  Naturally rich in gallic acid, Bd Serum also reduces redness on the skin to lessen the signs of breakouts.

Recommended Biologi routine to avoid or heal maskne

Morning:

Evening:

  • Double cleanse with Bc Refresh Cleanser and remove with Biologi microfibre cloth
  • Apply one to two pumps of Bd Luminosity Serum. If the skin is severely irritated, apply one to two pumps of Bf Restore Serum instead.
  • Apply ¼ pump of Bk Rejuvenation Vitamin C Eye Serum around the eye area.

Optional:

If the skin is drier than usual, add two to three drops of Br Organic Rosehip Oil over the serum to give extra nourishment.

With the pandemic reaching its peak, masks in the workplace and for travelling purposes are something that many of us will have to get used to long into the future. To reduce the tell-tale signs of mask-wearing, visit our shop today.
