The menopause is the inevitable time in a woman’s life when her menstrual cycle ends.

While few are fortunate and their cycle stops suddenly overnight, for most women, the menopause journey can take years from the onset of peri-menopause right through to post-menopause.

During the time known informally as the ‘change of life’ (which starts for most anywhere from aged 45 onwards), ovaries age and prepare to stop releasing eggs. Oestrogen levels decline, and the reproductive hormones (luteinising hormone and follicle stimulating hormone) are no longer effective at controlling oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

Every woman is different, but when experiencing such significant hormonal changes, a woman may notice ongoing symptoms such as lack of energy, lethargy, nausea, changes in mood, headaches, insomnia, hot flushes and fluctuations in weight. Perhaps most visibly, the impact of menopause can be spotted in changes to her skin.

Here are some common skin concerns associated with menopause and how you can combat them the Biologi way…naturally.

Acne and breakouts

If you thought your acne days were over along with your teenage years, menopause might be about to prove you wrong.

The decline in oestrogen may lead to an increase in testosterone which can impact the sebaceous glands where oil is produced. This can lead to an increase in sebum making pores more prone to blockages resulting in acne and breakouts.

Biologi’s natural solution

  • Thoroughly cleanse

Make sure pores are kept clear with a gentle, natural cleanser that opens pores and removes dirt and bacteria. The cleaner the pores, the less debris and bacteria to react with excess sebum causing spots.

  • Regularly exfoliate

Exfoliation helps keep pores clear and removes the dead skin cells which can contribute to blocked pores and spots. Gently exfoliate every two to three days to keep skin pores free from debris.

Bd serum contains tartaric acid which is a natural enzyme exfoliator that helps keep excess oil flowing to avoid blockages. Bd serum is extract of Davidson plum and contains gallic acid, a phenolic acid that works to reduce redness and inflammation to minimise the appearance of breakouts.

  • Use Bk serum every night

Bk serum contains powerful phytonutrients with anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties to heal and repair inflamed skin. Apply Bk serum all over the face after thoroughly cleansing so the actives get to work while you sleep.

Remember, there is no cure for acne caused by hormonal changes apart from balancing the hormones, these suggestions will minimise the appearance, but no product will be able to offer a cure.

Rosacea can manifest at any time, but for many women, hot flushes experienced during menopause can trigger its appearance.  Rosacea presents as flushed skin especially on the cheeks, with small bumps and even broken capillaries.

Biologi’s natural solution

Once again, there’s no cure for rosacea caused by changes in hormones, but avoiding red wine, spicy food and extremes of heat and cold may help relieve the symptoms.

  • Bd serum

Quercetin is a phytonutrient found in Davidson plum which reduces redness of the skin minimising the appearance of rosacea.

Gallic acid is a plant active found in both Bk and Bd serums. The phenolic acid helps reduce the visible signs of inflammatory skin disorders including redness. Consider applying Bk serum at night and Bd serum in the morning, but never layer the serums, or you’ll reduce the efficacy of both.

Dry skin

While oily skin may be one woman’s menopausal nemesis, for others, the drop in oestrogen may cause oil glands to reduce in size which can restrict the production of sebum leading to dry, itchy skin.

Biologi’s natural solution

  • Drink lots of water

The most effective way to hydrate skin cells is from the inside out so make sure you’re drinking at least two to three litres of water a day, more if your skin feels like it needs it.

  • Use a serum rather than a moisturiser

Moisturisers hydrate the skin from the outer layers which can have a detrimental effect on the natural hydrating processes. Always use a plant-based serum rather than a moisturiser as this will penetrate the cells at a deeper level, and the naturally occurring phyto actives will support the skins natural hydrating processes rather than work against them as moisturiser does.

Long-term use of moisturiser can make skin cells lazy and leads to reliance on chemicals and synthetically-based products so avoid using them on menopausal skin that may be prone to problems.

Bf serum is pure extract of finger lime and contains ferulic acid, a naturally occurring hydroxycinnamic acid that helps retain moisture within the cutaneous layers of the skin to aid hydration.

Use Bf serum on the face and body where persistent dry patches appear.

Fine lines and wrinkles

Not only does a woman have to contend with changes in hormones during menopause, but also the slowing down of collagen production which results in visible signs of ageing such as fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin.

Biologi’s natural solution

The bad news is there’s no way to increase collagen production naturally. The good news, however, is Bk eye serum!

To reduce the visible signs of ageing, use Bk serum all over the face daily.

The potent plant-derived vitamin C content of Kakadu plum is a powerful anti-ageing active which helps to reduce fine lines, increase skin elasticity and contributes to supple younger-looking skin.

Skin sensitivity

A decline in oestrogen can cause sensitised skin that is red, stings and is painful or uncomfortable to touch.

Biologi’s natural solution

Sensitised skin is caused by a damaged dermal layer which needs to be repaired.

Remove harsh scrubs, synthetic acids, fragrances, and occlusive products from your skincare routine as these may all contribute to further irritation.

Next, strengthen the skin and infuse the deeper layers with a water-based natural plant serum packed with antioxidants to hydrate and repair sensitive skin caused by a change in hormones.

Biologi serums

The full range of Biologi serums is free from synthetic ingredients and chemicals. Choose the Biologi serum that addresses your individual skincare concerns where daily use will repair sensitised skin in the process.
