PROACTIVE AGEING – CHOOSE THE WAY YOU AGE!
Growing older is an inevitable part of life that none of us has any control over.
Ageing, however, is a completely different story!
Ageing is a marketer’s dream. Understanding the issues many have with those tell-tale signs of getting older, shelves are lined with products targeting those wanting to roll back the years with the next lotion or potion designed to combat the signs of ageing.
As the body ages, collagen and elastin production naturally slow down leading to the appearance of fine lines, sagging skin and in most cases, wrinkles. But did you know, we each have a choice on how our skin ages?
And fun fact number two, it doesn’t involve face masks, expensive eye creams filled with synthetics or piling on the makeup!
While we’ll never be able to put the brakes on our passing years (and nor would we want to!), the way your skin ages is something we have control over. Here’s how Biologi recommends you get proactive with your ageing!
Hydrate from the inside out
It doesn’t matter how old you are, cells need hydration to function efficiently. As the body ages, however, a decline in the production of natural oils combined with hormonal changes and slower cellular turnover can lead to dry, rough, skin.
Consuming more liquids in the form of plain water, smoothies or herbal teas will increase the moisture in each cell to help them function optimally. Results are a hydrated, brighter complexion and more youthful skin.
Protect skin from the sun
The harsh UVA and UVB rays emitted by the sun are a prime culprit for accelerating the signs of ageing. Studies show that UV exposure is responsible for 80% of the skin’s ageing! This means that regularly applying sunscreen from as young an age as possible may slow down the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin later in life.
We recommend daily use of a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Most sunscreens only protect against UVB rays, those that cause burning, so please read the label carefully.
Eat your way to more youthful skin
What’s on your plate can have a direct impact on the ageing process. Collagen is the protein that keeps skin supple and youthful but slows down as you get older. A diet rich in protein and vitamin A (which converts to retinol in the body) is one of the healthiest (and most delicious!) ways to boost collagen in the body and promote younger, firmer skin naturally.
Fill your plate with lots of meat, eggs, leafy greens, broccoli, fish, spinach and orange and yellow fruit that all create amino acids essential for collagen synthesis.
Build antioxidant protection against free radicals
One of the biggest keys to unlocking more youthful skin is building antioxidant protection into the protective dermal barrier.
Antioxidants defend against free radicals which damage cells and lead to the signs of ageing. Build up antioxidant protection by making nutritional changes to include more anthocyanins (berries), flavonoids (green tea and citrus fruit), and vitamin C (oranges and Kakadu plum).
Antioxidants can also be applied topically by applying Bd serum, a single-plant extract of Davidson plum.
Bd serum is a potent mix of natural phyto nutrients such as gallic acid, tartaric acid, anthocyanin, and quercetin which all work together to build antioxidant protection and prolong the visible signs of ageing.
Bf serum and Bk serum (single-plant extracts of finger lime and Kakadu plum respectively) are all potent sources of vitamin C which provides antioxidant protection while also stimulating the growth of collagen in the skin as an added bonus!
Apply rosehip oil
Br Rosehip Oil is the only unrefined and cold-pressed rosehip oil on the market. Rosehip oil is a natural source of carotene which contains the holy grail of anti-ageing skincare, vitamin A! Apply Biologi serum of choice after cleansing in the evening and wait for 30 minutes before applying rosehip oil and let those nutrients sink in overnight.
Smoking greatly speeds up the skin ageing process and can lead to a dull, sallow complexion. Not only does smoking lead to fine lines around the mouth area from the repetitive action of sucking on a cigarette, but it also impacts circulation restricting the flow of healthy nutrients delivered to the skin.
Choose to put down the cigarettes today, your skin will thank you!
Move your body
Gentle movement to suit your lifestyle and capability is one of the most effective ways to improve skin tone. Whether you choose a brisk walk, a yoga or Pilates session or a class at the gym, regular exercise is proven to improve circulation, boost the immune system and increase those feel-good endorphins; all of which leads to a brighter complexion and potentially a more youthful appearance.
We urge consumers not to fall into the marketing trap that harsh creams, eye moisturisers and face masks are the only way to combat the signs of ageing. Feed your skin natural nutrients that work in the skin cells just as they do in the plant and look at some lifestyle changes to help your skin grow old gracefully.
