Seven basic rules for an effective skincare routine. At Biologi, simplicity is our key.
There’s no denying that ‘skincare’ can be a minefield.
From the long list of dos and don’ts to understanding what natural really means, developing a skincare ritual that is kind to your skin, your wallet and the environment is no easy task.
At Biologi, simplicity is our key.
Our entire range of fully active serums has been designed to strip skincare back to basics and provide what the skin needs to thrive, and not a single thing more.
So this week, we’re taking skincare back to basics. If you follow these skincare rules and nothing else, we guarantee your skin will thank you for it!
Always double cleanse
The truth is many of us are in the habit of not cleansing enough with products that are unkind to the skin.
We’ve been led to believe that if the skin feels tight after cleansing, it’s because it’s clean.
This is incorrect.
Makeup wipes and cleansers formulated with irritating surfactants can strip the skin’s natural oils from the surface leaving the skin dehydrated and lacking clarity. The tight feeling is the skin telling you it’s unhappy and desperately needs moisture.
We recommend an irritant-free, two-step cleanse that begins with removing makeup and surface dirt with a microfibre pad.
The reusable pads work by trapping impurities in the fibres and gently lifting them from the skin’s surface. Follow the initial cleanse with a treatment cleanse using Bc Refresh Cleanser. Our world-first serum cleanser contains fully active ingredients and removes dirt without the use of irritating formulating ingredients.
Fragrance is one of the most common skin irritants. The ingredients used to make a product smell nice have been proven to dry out and damage cells leading to sensitised skin and breakouts. We recommend you avoid fragrance wherever possible (even supposed natural essential oils can be harsh to delicate cells) to avoid irritation and damaging healthy cells.
Choose serum over a moisturiser
Moisturiser is the most traditional option to hydrate skin. To achieve the desired consistency, however, synthetic emulsifiers are used to formulate lotions that can irritate the skin and water down any activity found in the naturally derived ingredients.
When you choose a serum over a moisturiser, the product can penetrate deeper into the dermal layers to work with the skin’s natural hydration processes. Not only are serums more effective, but they’re also kinder to the skin cells.
The skin is the body’s largest organ and needs hydrating just like every other organ. As it’s considered ‘non-essential’, the vital organs receive hydration first with the skin at the bottom of the hydration chain. Drink two to three litres of water every day to boost the skin’s hydration processes naturally.
Always wear sunscreen
Wearing sunscreen every day is fundamentally one of the best things you can do for your skin. And yes, we know the sun doesn’t shine every day and we also know that your makeup contains SPF. But the only way to fully protect against the damaging UV rays emitted by the sun is to wear full protection sunscreen. Every. Single. Day. UV rays can contribute to ageing, damaged skin cells and of course, cancer and the ONLY way to minimise this damage is to wear sunscreen.
Have we made ourselves clear?!
Look for active ingredients rather than ‘naturally derived’
While a product might contain naturally derived ingredients, it’s the activity level of those ingredients that are the most important to the skin. When a product contains water (aqua) and synthetic formulating ingredients, any natural activity is reduced. Products that are 100% active contain phytonutrients and minerals that alter the function of the skin on a cellular level making results faster, more noticeable and longer-lasting.
Understand the ingredients in your products
Sure, it’s easy for us to sit here and tell you what you should and shouldn’t do in your skincare routine, but the best piece of advice we can give you is to learn what’s in your skincare products. Look at the ingredients, Google what they mean and make sure you learn about your skin type while tuning out to marketing and sales taglines that boast the next best thing in skincare.
At Biologi, we’ve stripped skincare back to basics.
Our complete range of products has been created using a revolutionary extraction system developed by Biologi’s founder, Ross Macdougald. Every plant has been chosen based on its unique benefits to the skin and as 100% active products, the serums defend, repair and nourish the skin just as they do the plant.
