Skin concerns during pregnancy and the Biologi solution

The ‘pregnancy glow’ is something that expectant mothers aspire to.

But as much as a bright, luminous complexion is what those pregnancy dreams are made of, the phrase is unfortunately coined by the changes in hormone levels that can leave the skin shiny and greasy.

And that’s not all!

While a little miracle is being housed and nurtured, hormonal and body changes can lead to a whole range of skin concerns including:

  • Congestion
  • Pigmentation
  • Increase in stretch marks
  • Dehydration
  • Increase in ageing

But it’s not all bad news! Keep reading as we share some of the more common pregnancy skin concerns and how to minimise the signs or avoid them the Biologi way.

Stretch marks

As the skin expands due to rapid weight gain, the middle layer of skin can tear causing visible purple or silver marks. Stretch marks may fade over time but keeping the skin hydrated and nourished during pregnancy is the best way to avoid them forming as the body changes.

The Biologi solution

Bf Restore Face & Body Serum is a source of active vitamin C which can increase elasticity and help the skin expand while increasing hydration. Apply liberally to the whole body as required but particularly areas prone to stretch marks such as the stomach, buttocks and the tops of the legs.

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin disorder that can’t be attributed to one particular cause. What we do know about the condition is that changes to hormones caused by pregnancy can lead to the blood vessels under the skin becoming visible presenting as flushed, red and sometimes painful skin.

While rosacea is often painless, in extreme cases, it can sting, burn or cause sensitivity across the nose, cheeks or forehead.

The Biologi solution

If hormones cause rosacea, it can be hard to treat during pregnancy when there’s little control over the body. You can adapt some lifestyle factors including reducing anything that heats up the body such as sun exposure, hot showers and spicy food. We also recommend avoiding products containing artificial colours and fragrances and harsh scrubs that can irritate the skin.

Applying a combination of hard-working plant actives can also help reduce redness. Cleanse with Bc Refresh Cleanser for its soothing combination of amino acids and phytonutrients that work together to reduce redness and condition the skin. Follow with Bf Restore Face & Body Serum to reduce redness and irritation, or Bqk Radiance Serum to enhance the overall glow.

The ‘mask of pregnancy’ – Melasma

Melasma or the ‘mask of pregnancy’ appears as brown patches of skin on the cheeks, forehead, nose or chin. Caused by changes in hormones, melasma is harmless and often clears up on its own after pregnancy.

The Biologi solution

During pregnancy, aim to help protect the skin from the overproduction of melanin.  This can be challenging as hormones are generally the trigger factor. Encourage cellular renewal by applying Bd Luminosity Serum that relies on tartaric acid to brighten and clarify the skin. To target pigmentation, you can also introduce plant vitamin C found in Bk Vitamin C Face & Eye Serum or Bf Restore Face & Body Serum.

Finally, don’t forget to apply physical sunscreen daily to avoid damage forming.

Perioral dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis is another common skin concern experienced during pregnancy. Perioral dermatitis presents as a red rash around the mouth which can be pimply or contain pus. The rash can be itchy, tight, sting or feel uncomfortable.

While perioral dermatitis may have many causes such as ongoing use of steroid creams, stress, allergies and compromised immunity, when it occurs in pregnancy, it’s likely to be because of hormonal changes as oestrogen increases.

If the symptoms are contained to the mouth, you can confirm it’s perioral dermatitis rather than any other form.

The Biologi solution

Perioral dermatitis is essentially caused by a damaged barrier function. This means that toxins can get into the deeper cellular layers, and water can get out leading to painful, dehydrated skin. To reduce the chances of dermatitis, you first need to repair the barrier function to help protect against pathogens found in the skin’s microbiome. Regular use of Bf Restore Face & Body Serum gives the skin a powerful combination of ferulic acid and tryptophan to repair and protect the barrier function while hydrating the skin too.

While repairing the outer dermal layer, also avoid using steroid creams and any products containing artificial colours and fragrances that can lead to more damage.

Recommended Biologi skincare routine during pregnancy

In all pregnancies, our skincare experts recommend the less is more approach. Remove all products containing synthetics and rely on multiuse serums that can nourish, heal and protect the cells in one application.

A more tailored regime can be advised depending on your individual skincare needs, but here is a general pregnancy routine to use as a guide.

Apply Bc Refresh Cleanser to gently cleanse and hydrate the skin

Bc Refresh Cleanser, its natural saponin and phytoactives gently but effectively cleanse your skin without stripping or drying, leaving your barrier intact and healthy. Remove with the Biologi microfibre cloth which is gentle but effective.

Apply Bf Restore Face & Body Serum twice a day to build up the skin barrier

Once you’ve used a whole bottle and the signs of the pregnancy concern have reduced, move on to a serum of choice to nourish and protect the cells. We love Bk Vitamin C Serum as It’s a potent source of vitamin C which pregnancy skin loves.

For ageing: Introduce Bm Regenerate Anti-Ageing Serum that contains necessary phytoactives that target ageing and can be used on sensitive skin types.

If you need extra nourishment, apply a couple of drops of Br Organic Rosehip Oil over your Biologi Serum for extra hydration and protection as required.
