RADICALLY RETHINKING SKIN

Skincare solutions for teenage skin.

Skincare isn’t something that’s at the top of the worry list for most children.

While collagen’s flowing freely, cells are firm, complexion is moist and dewy and skin for most kids, is just…skin.

It’s not generally until puberty hits and skin starts to go through changes brought about by a surge in hormones that teenagers begin to stand up and pay attention to the organ that they’ve always taken for granted.

Their skin.

To get scientific, puberty begins when the luteinizing hormone (also known as lutropin or LH) is released from the pituitary gland.

This happens at a different time for everyone but commonly between the ages of eleven and fourteen.

LH triggers the release of oestrogen in females, and testosterone in males which will increase sebum production and can lead to common teenage skin complaints such as acne, enlarged pores, and oily skin.

It’s usually about this time that teenagers start to take an interest in their appearance and lay the foundations for a lifelong skincare routine.

Unfortunately, this is also the time that skincare manufacturers target their marketing efforts towards delicate teenage skin by promoting acne and oil-reducing products made from harsh ingredients that can end up doing more harm than good.

These often-abrasive products that promise to reduce oil and get rid of spots can dry out skin and damage the delicate dermal layer and lead to lifelong sensitised skin or more severe conditions like eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis.

Here are our skincare tips for teenagers who want to have bright, glowing and pimple-free skin while protecting delicate skin cells not just today, but long into the future.

Cleanse daily

Male or female and regardless of whether makeup is used, it’s essential to cleanse daily.

Choose a delicate cleanser matched to your skin type (a skin therapist can advise you if you’re overwhelmed by all the products on the shelf).

While we fully promote the use of natural products where possible, there’s no such thing as a completely natural cleanser, so it’s important to seek professional advice to choose a product that is gentle on young skin cells.

Regardless of whether the teenager is wearing makeup or not, pollutants caused by the environment combined with the surge in hormones mean that there’s no better time to get into the habit of regular cleansing to care for your skin on a deeper level.

Control oil flow

As a child grows into a teenager, the release of LH can cause a surge in sebum production in both boys and girls. Excess sebum increases oil flow which can lead to breakouts, enlarged pores and acne.

Control oil flow with daily use of a serum rich in fruit acids. Biologi’s Bd serum is packed with tartaric acid to clear blocked pores and reduce the redness and inflammation that breakouts can cause.

Use a gentle toner

If your skin is particularly oily, introduce some gentle alpha hydroxy acids (AHA), lactic acid or fruit enzymes into your routine to dry out skin pores. Choose a mild toner that doesn’t contain abrasive ingredients that can cause damage to the skin’s barrier.

A skin therapist can advise you on the best product to reduce excess oil.

Avoid moisturisers

While now’s the time to start to enhance the skins natural hydrating processes, always opt for a serum rather than a moisturiser.

Moisturisers often contain occlusive ingredients that can block already sensitive pores.

Long-term use of moisturiser can also impair the skin’s natural hydrating processes by causing a reliance on hydration from synthetic ingredients making skin lazy.

A serum, on the other hand, penetrates skin cells with active ingredients to enhance the natural hydration processes rather than replace them.

Biologi’s full range of serums can completely replace moisturiser and treat a variety of common teenage skincare concerns without unbalancing the skin’s natural processes.

Wear sunscreen

There’s no better time to start protecting your skin from the harsh UV rays than right now.

The sooner you start wearing sunscreen daily, the more protection you’ll get against fine lines and wrinkles as you age. While this might not seem like much of a priority now, trust us when we say that your future self will thank you for protecting the delicate skin layers early on.

Build up anti-oxidant protection

Anti-oxidants protect against free radical damage caused by pollution in the environment. The more you can build up anti-oxidants through your skincare products, the more you will minimise the impact of this damage as your skin develops.

Biologi’s natural Bk serum is pure extract of Kakadu Plum and is rich in natural vitamin C which offers anti-oxidant protection against free radicals in the environment. Bd serum contains quercetin which is a flavanol that helps build up a barrier against environmental damage.

Learn about ingredients used in skincare products

With a teenage budget typically on the lower end of the scale, manufacturers are smart at creating products to fit an allowance. This is often done by using cheap chemicals that provide no benefit to the skin and can even lead to long-term damage.

Learn about the ingredients that are in your products and learn how to identify those that can cause long-term damage because they do exist, and manufacturers aren’t afraid to use them.

The best time to start taking care of your skin is today.

Everything you put on your skin from this point forward will play a significant role in how well you age. Once collagen production slows down and skin becomes less firm, as it does as you age, you’ll be thankful you started now!
