RADICALLY RETHINKING SKIN

THE FOUR HEALTH IMPLICATIONS OF AGEING SKIN

Ageing skin is a concern faced by men and women the world over.

Growing older is an inevitable part of the life cycle. With our rising calendar years, collagen and elastin production slow down leading to the common tell-tale signs of ageing; sagging, wrinkles, and skin that’s dry, thin and lacks elasticity.

For some, growing old ‘gracefully’ is not as easy as it sounds and many struggle with the visual aspect of reaching maturity.

For others though, the physical signs of ageing are of little concern.

You feel great, you know you look terrific, so why should you be concerned with the laughter lines that show you’ve led a happy life and a few crow’s feet that tell a thousand stories?

Well, believe it or not, ageing skin doesn’t just tell people that we’re getting older.

Skin that’s noticeably ageing may also have links to some health issues that are nothing to do with vanity.

Here are four reasons ageing skin affects more than just your looks:

  1. Seborrhoeic keratosis

Seborrhoeic keratosis is a group of wart-like spots on the body that occur as people age. They can be flat or raised, and appear in various colours – light brown, darker brown, grey, yellowish, grey, pink, and even black.

They usually occur on skin that has been exposed to the sun over an extended period, earning them the nickname of senile warts. Doctors would term them a benign keratosis or basal cell papilloma.

While the warts themselves may be relatively harmless, seborrheic keratosis can be an early sign of skin cancer so must be monitored.

2. Solar keratosis

Solar keratosis (also known as actinic keratosis) is a common condition caused by sun damage as a result of long-term exposure to UV rays.

Solar keratosis presents as rough, dry patches on areas that receive a lot of exposure to the sun such as the face and hands.

While a relatively common and often harmless skin condition, solar keratosis also has links to skin cancer so shouldn’t be left unattended. While treatment is recommended, an even better option is prevention through trying to slow the rate at which skin ages.

3. Bowen’s Disease

Bowen’s Disease is a disease associated with ageing skin that looks similar to psoriasis. It presents as dry, rough patches of skin and while it may like a perfectly innocent skin condition, it’s also an early form of skin cancer.

4. Smoking-related illnesses

Smoking is one of the most common ways to accelerate the ageing process. Not only do smokers increase the visible signs of ageing such as wrinkles and sagging skin, but because of the toxic chemicals found in cigarettes, they may also be at a higher risk of more severe health issues like cancer, tooth decay, stroke, and lung disease.

If smoking is the primary cause of premature ageing of your skin, there is a higher likelihood your overall health may be at increased risk.

Slowing the ageing process

It’s possible to slow down the appearance of skin ageing through many factors such as a balanced diet, sufficient sleep, and protection from sun exposure.

It’s also important to start using natural anti-ageing skincare products as prevention instead of relying on them as a cure.

The Biologi solution to ageing:

Bk serum

BK serum is made from pure Kakadu Plum extract and is potent in natural vitamin C that contains powerful anti-ageing properties. Regular use of the serum also reduces the visibility of sun spots that may lead to any of the pre-cancerous skin conditions listed above.

Gallic acid is a phenolic acid found in Bk serum which reduces membrane liquid peroxidation and DNA damage to reduce the potential of early ageing. Gallic acid is also a potent anti-oxidant that protects skin from the damage that free radicals can cause which lead to signs of ageing.

Ellagic acid found in Bk serum reduces the potential of photo ageing (premature ageing caused by UV exposure, rather than natural ageing) by interrupting skin wrinkling processes and reducing inflammation.

Bd serum

As well as also containing gallic acid, Bd serum is also rich in the flavonoid anthocyanin which is a potent anti-ageing active that improves mitochondrial function to promote the regenerative capacity of skin cells and improves collagen production. This helps to restore skin damage caused by over-exposure to the sun.

Bf serum

Bf serum is pure extract of Finger Lime and rich in byangelicin, a flavanone that improves collagen and elastin production in the skin to reduce the potential for early ageing.
