If you’ve been paying close attention in the past couple of years, you’ll have noticed one of the newest tools on the skincare block, the Gua Sha.

Commonly made from precious stones such as jade or rose quartz, Gua Sha has become a bathroom cabinet staple for consumers across Australia, and for very good reason.

As always, we like to provide the information that helps consumers make their own choices about skincare products and treatments, so read on as we give you the lowdown on Gua Sha.

What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha is an alternative therapy massage tool used to gently scrape the skin to provide a natural, at-home facial experience.

Likened to natural Botox for the skin, regular use of a Gua Sha boasts a whole range of benefits to the skin. As the procedure lifts and contours the face, it also helps serums and oils penetrate deeper into the skin’s layers, increasing the efficacy of skincare products.

History of Gua Sha

Gua Sha is a traditional Chinese skincare treatment that dates back hundreds of years.

Initially designed to stimulate the flow of energy (Qi) through facial meridians, the use of stones has gradually been introduced to relieve tension, increase circulation and aid lymphatic drainage.

While fingers are able to stimulate the same energy flow, using a stone allows you to get deeper into the muscles leading to faster, more noticeable results.

What is Gua Sha made from?

While Gua Sha can be performed with any stone, the most effective materials are jade and rose quartz which are glide effortlessly across the skin and thought to carry healing energy.

Benefits of regular Gua Sha

Regularly using a rose quartz stone to perform Gua Sha stimulates blood circulation which increases the nutrients and fresh oxygen sent to the skin which can brighten the complexion.

Further benefits include:

  • Improves elasticity
  • Firmer skin
  • Supports lymphatic drainage
  • Relieves tension in the facial muscles
  • Boosts blood circulation
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Promotes healing
  • Reduces puffiness
  • Increases product absorption

Step by step guide to using Gua Sha

Using Gua Sha facial tool couldn’t be easier!

To avoid irritation, there must be enough moisture for the Gua Sha to slide along the skin with ease.  For best results, use with an oil such as Br oil.

If you want to use Biologi serums first, the results will still be noticeable, but you must always use oil over the top to get the best results from the Gua Sha.

Step 1: Apply Br oil to freshly cleansed skin.

Step 2: Rub the Gua Sha in your hands to warm it up and grease with the excess oil.

Step 3: Sweep gently over the entire face section by section including the neck, cheekbones and brow bone.

Step 4: Repeat three to four times as necessary, following the same pattern.

How long does Gua Sha take?

Gua Sha is a simple treatment that should take between three and four minutes a maximum of once a day and a minimum of once a week. You can do it more or less depending on the skin’s response, however, once you start, we’re quite sure it will soon become an essential step in your daily skincare routine!

Can everyone use Gua Sha?

While Gua Sha is a non-invasive, natural treatment, if you’re pregnant or undergoing chemotherapy, you should receive medical advice before performing Gua Sha.

While it can help improve the efficacy of active ingredients in skincare, Gua Sha is also potentially unsuitable for anyone with inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema.

Gua Sha is an ancient treatment developed for the modern world and we love ours!  Visit the Biologi shop today and receive a FREE rose quartz Gua Sha with every full size serum and Br oil purchase. Available while stocks last.
